If you’re biking along the Skyline Trail and get a flat, or have most any problem with your bike, you now have a repair stand with most of the tools you’ll need to:

  • Fixing a flat tire.
  • Adjust brakes and gears for smooth operation.
  • Secure loose components.
  • Perform quick tune-ups to ensure the bike is rideable.

Having these tools readily available in a public work stand ensures that cyclists can handle the most common mechanical problems without needing a full repair shop.

Pictured here is Jason Hudson, Billings TrailNet’s 2024 Volunteer of the Year! Jason installed the TWO bike repair stands along the Skyline Trail.  In addition, Jason has built numerous pump tracks and mountain bike trails in Billings and the Acton Recreation Area.

The repair stand comes with:

1. Philips and Standard Screwdrivers
  • Repairs/Adjustments:
    • Adjusting derailleur limit screws to fine-tune gear shifting.
    • Tightening or loosening screws on accessories like lights, reflectors, or racks.
    • Fixing loose screws on shifters or brakes.
2. Steel Core Tire Levers (2)
  • Repairs:
    • Removing a tire from the rim during a flat repair or tube replacement. The two levers allow you to pry off the tire more easily.
    • Reinstalling the tire after fixing or replacing the tube.
3. Headset/Pedal Wrench
  • Repairs:
    • Tightening or loosening the pedals from the crank arms.
    • Adjusting or maintaining the headset (the bearing assembly that connects the fork to the bike frame).
4. 8/10mm Cone Wrench
  • Repairs:
    • Adjusting the hub bearings on wheels to ensure smooth rotation without excessive play.
    • Tightening or loosening nuts on older bike components like brakes or derailleurs.
5. 9/11mm Cone Wrench
  • Repairs:
    • Similar to the 8/10mm cone wrench but for components requiring a slightly larger size.
    • Often used for hubs or certain accessory attachments.
6. Torx T-25 Wrench
  • Repairs:
    • Tightening or loosening Torx bolts found on modern disc brake rotors.
    • Adjusting other Torx-based components like some modern handlebar stems or seat clamps.
7. Hex Key Set
  • Repairs:
    • Almost every aspect of a modern bike, including:
      • Adjusting brakes, derailleurs, and seat height.
      • Installing or removing accessories like bottle cages, racks, or fenders.
      • Tightening or loosening bolts on the crankset, handlebars, and stem.
