The world is stressful!  Worrying and high blood pressure can lead to all kinds of problems including cardiac illness, anxiety and depression.  People run to their doctors for medications to keep it all under control.

A report from the Stress Management Society states that “aerobic exercise is as effective as medications” in managing stress.  Aerobic exercise, such as cycling, leads to reduced blood pressure, more relaxed muscles and more open blood vessels, all traits of a relaxed state.

Other benefits include weight loss, improved sleep patterns and improved mental sharpness.  One study found that a 5% improvement in cardio-respiratory fitness led to up to a 15% improvement in performance on mental tasks.  There is a direct link between endurance exercise and feelings of well-being.  There are also social benefits, the scenery and the good feeling that comes with being able to wear spandex.

Cycling is a sport that you can do at any level of skill.  Check the trail map of the Billings area (available at www.Bikenet.org) and go check out someplace you haven’t been before.  A great start is Swords Park up on the Rims, or Mystic Park up to Mary St. in the Heights.  Go Explore.  Go Enjoy.
